John's uncle Merwin (Bracken's great uncle) was the inspiration behind the idea for Bracken's project. Merwin was born with cerebral palsy, and a smile and laughter that was contagious to anyone in the room! For the last seven years that we have lived abroad and summer vacationed in the states, our family has become one of Merwin's greatest fans. Thanks to John's parents for their amazing example of love, service, and devotion to Merwin. Every single Sunday, Grandpa Wilde would pick Merwin up from his group home and take him to do by far Merwin's most favorite thing in the world......spend the day at the Wilde home attending church, eating dinner, and playing checkers, marbles and puzzles. Because of Grandma and Grandpa Wilde's devotion to Merwin, our family was also able to benefit from his presence, and sweet spirit. He loved to ask the boys to challenge him in his favorite board games, constantly telling them how much smarter he was than them (:, and hearing the laughter amongst them. We loved hearing about his weekly adventure at his "job", and hearing his enthusiasm when he proudly exclaimed how many boxes he assembled each day at the warehouse.
Recently (October 25, 2010) Merwin passed away from a quick spreading, devastating form of cancer, that had completely overtaken his frail body. We were soooo saddened when we heard of the news, but we were also excited to know he now had the healthy body to run and jump that he had never experienced in this lifetime. Shortly after Merwin's death, Bracken decided he wanted to dedicate his Eagle project to helping others who were physically and mentally handicapped like Merwin.
HOME SWEET HOME
With Merwin in mind, Bracken began his search for his project, and in no time came upon a Chinese organization called "Home Sweet Home." Volunteers from Home Sweet Home search for handicapped individuals living on the streets in downtown Shanghai--most of whom have been orphaned their entire life. The volunteers offer these individuals they find living on the streets, a room and board at their boarding home, as well as opportunities to take classes such as computers, Chinese and English lessons, as well as teach them simple day to day living skills. Not only do they provide them with classes, they also offer them a job (with remedial pay) regardless of their handicap. The mission of Home Sweet Home is to train the individuals to be active members of society. After two years of successful work and training at Home Sweet Home, the volunteers help the individuals find jobs within the community.
Our first visit at the Home Sweet Home facility, we were given a tour including the warehouse where the individuals worked, as well as different rooms for teaching and instruction, and their own "Home Sweet Home Boutique" where the worker's handmade items made in the warehouse are sold

ASSESSING THE PROJECT
There were handfuls of projects throughout the facility that were in need of renovations, makeovers, or updates. Bracken decided the library was a perfect project for renovation, and came up with his own plan of how he would execute. He began sending out e-mails explaining his project to his boy scout troop, our neighborhood, and church groups asking for entry level English books, flash cards, and other learning materials. It was amazing to see how many people were willing to help, as our garage began to be filled with bagfuls of donations.
EXECUTING THE PROJECT
The first week, Bracken organized a group of scouts to move out the existing bookshelves, and other items from the room. The scouts then sanded the walls, and applied a fresh coat of white paint to the room which was very badly needed!!
The following week, Bracken instructed a second group of scouts how the new bookshelves he had chosen were to be assembled, and where they were to be placed in the room.
The donated books were then separated into English and Chinese, and arranged in the bookshelves.
And last but not least, a colorful alphabet poster and a few decorative items were added to make the library a little more comfy and cheerful.
Before and After........
A couple weeks after the project was complete, Bracken was asked to return to Home Sweet Home where he was met by the directors of the organization who explained......
......we have prayed for some way to receive new library books and book shelves for a long time. However, we knew we could not afford to do it ourselves. We knew the Lord would provide, and then Bracken came..........
Graciously, they presented him with a couple of heartfelt homemade items from the HSH workers themselves....a beaded dragon fly magnet, and a shirt designed and embroidered by two of the sweet workers---a sweet token Bracken will always remember.
Yes, three months ago when this project first started it was just enough to "fulfill" the eagle requirement. Ironically, both Bracken as well as any other person involved would agree.....the true fulfillment was found as Bracken entered the warehouse and received smiles and applause from each and every worker. Talking with Bracken on the way home, we agreed, the happiness the workers had for their new library was beyond any plaque, medal, or title. A fulfillment that will be treasured forever!

Oh, this was such a great post! I'm so proud of Bracken's hard work, but even more so, that he learned so much from it. To see how happy those special people were couldn't help but stir your heart. Bracken loves to help people. He always has been so good that way. This is just another experience of many that he will forever remember that there is so much joy in service to his fellowmen.
Alison-what an awesome project and oppurtunity. It leaves me feeling a little less hatred for the scouting program :) J/K. I know its something I have to do--I'm just not feelin' it with my own son yet. This is the kind of experience that Bracken will remember and build upon for the rest of his life. He's a stud. Congrats to him!
oh gosh, messy embarrassing tears everywhere. Wow. SO sweet. So proud of you Bracken!
That post made me cry! How wonderful that Bracken was able to have that experience so young in life. He felt the spirit of service which will benefit him the rest of his life. Thanks so much for recording the event with pictures and sharing the inspiring experience with all of us!! Congratulations, Bracken!!!
Ok, so what this means is, now I'm locked into having my boys become Eagle Scouts, too?! Great.
Actually, in all truthfulness, I feel like I do after watching a weight loss infomercial, where the people lose 10 pant sizes in 20 minutes = Inspired! That, and it is truly possible (?) for my boys to achieve! Then again, Bracken has always been a special kind of boy (man)! I've known that ever since I saw that head full of hair when he was only a couple weeks old. He's always been such a special nephew to me. I'll never forget coming home after work, to find you guys up visiting for the weekend. He'd be in his swing over by the fireplace (and naturally, Lady would be close by, as well). When he'd hear the door open, he'd squeal and squeal. Without fail, it just made my day. I guess it's safe to say that Bracken's had a way of doing that to people his whole life.
Then again, you're not such a bad mom either. I think that has "something" to do with it, no?
Love you lots. You should be so proud of yourself. It's no secret why the mothers get recognition and praise right along with their scout's achievements. There is no way they could do it without you.
Which is exactly what scares me the most. ;)
See you (and Bracken) soon! Maybe you guys can help me plan out Garrett's Eagle project. No reason we can't get a (HUGE) headstart on it, right?
xoxo
I can't believe bracken got his Eagle- great job! Thomas is the "unofficial" Eagle Scout project Go-to guy in our ward, having helped with 6 projects in the past 2 years! All of the projects have been building things for schools or sports fields/etc. This was an awesome project of Bracken's- one with lasting benefits to lots of people! Having 2 boys in Scouts (well one in Cubs)I am truly hoping they can embrace all the good that comes from this inspired program! Great job Bracken boy!
Very cool. Totally made me cry. Man, I want to do an Eagle Project! :)
After reading your blog and seeing all the inspired mothers who read your blog, you have to feel like Bracken's project was well-worth all the time and energy. What a great project.
I also thought it was very special that so much gratitude was expressed by those benefitting from Bracken's work. Often times, these young men don't get to see the long term effect on those they are trying to help.
Tell Bracken congratulations and job well-done.
This made me cry too! I have a special spot in my heart for those cute handicapped Chinese people! What a great project, and Bracken is a great kid, you should be so proud!
OMG! i was doing great until i saw the pic of merwin! :) he was simply an inspiration to me all growing up as well when he would fly on the "big bird" as he called it to come to az for easter and christmas to visit gma and gpa wilde :) his smile definitely brightened my day! i miss hearing his voice on sundays when willard would call my mom so merwin could talk to my mom...oh the fun memories we all have of him...sure do miss him..tell bracken i said amazing job on his project! :)
Why am I crying right now??? Maybe because the words, "I hate scouting" have come out of my mouth WAY too many times and this post totally inspired me. YOU inspire me. I'm such a crappy mom. I don't even sew his patches on. I hot glue them. I really need to change my attitude. I'm going to have Jade read this so that maybe he'll be inspired too. Love you, Al.
