Great Wall Campout
To most people, the majority of our activities we do in China are not considered "normal." However, it is this "abnormal" activity we have grown to love, and now consider "normal." A few weeks ago, Bracken and Parker were able to attend a boy scout camp. This camp was the same as any other boy scout camp--dirty, tiring, with uncertain weather conditions. However, this camp was far different than any other---this was a once in a lifetime campout on the Great Wall in Beijing. Neither Bracken nor Parker had seen the wall before. It was an amazing opportunity for them to experience the wall like no other.
The scouts left Friday evening, and took the sleeper train from Shanghai to Beijing. The idea was for the boys to sleep all night, and be refreshed in the morning for their hike. Being the true "Wildes" that they are, Bracken and Parker stayed up most the night and taught the other scouts all their many card games they had learned every summer from their Wilde relatives.
The next morning, they hiked the wall, and stopped along the way to pass off different scout requirements, as well as enjoy the beauty around them.
That night, the boys pitched their tents, and bundled up to stay warm. Being this was Parker's first campout, it was fun to hear his summary of events when he arrived home. "I had four layers of clothes on, and I was still freezing. My hands were so cold I decided to use one of my four pairs of socks for gloves!, It also didn't help that three huge rocks were right under my sleeping bag because it was impossible to find a flat piece of ground!" We believe his story helps to make the campout even more memorable, and one day he will use it to make himself "the hero!"
